Donald Trump says he has ordered the US military to “shoot and kill” any Iranian boat that is choking the Strait of Hormuz.
The US president said “there is to be no hesitation” on the US Navy’s response to such boats and added that the military is intensifying its mine clearing efforts in the critical waterway. “I am hereby ordering that activity to continue, but at a tripled up level,” he said.
It comes after the US military said it seized on Thursday another tanker associated with smuggling Iranian oil the Indian Ocean.
The seizure of the tanker, named the Majestic X, comes a day after Iran attacked three cargo ships in the Strait of Hormuz, capturing two of them. Ship-tracking data showed the Majestic X in the Indian Ocean between Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
