France’s Football Federation have released a statement following the abuse Ibrahima Konate suffered via social media following Liverpool’s victory over Galatasaray in the Champions League earlier this week.
The Reds cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Turkish side on Wednesday, sealing their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Liverpool were fully deserving of the win, firing 32 shots with 16 of those finding the target as the opposition had nothing to offer back.
Ibrahima Konate was involved in a collision with Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen which resulted in the striker suffering a wrist injury and being unable to continue.
It was a simple coming together, a challenge you see multiple times during a football match.
Following the victory, abuse was directed Ibrahima Konate’s way via his social media channels – a cowardly and unacceptable way to voice discontent.
“This behaviour is utterly unacceptable. It is dehumanising, cowardly and rooted in hate. Racism has no place in football, no place in society and no place anywhere – online or offline.”
“Our players are not targets. They are human beings. The abuse that continues to be directed at players, often hidden behind anonymous accounts, is a stain on the game and on the platforms that allow it to persist.”
“All of football must stand together and say, clearly and without compromise, that this will not be tolerated. Words of condemnation alone are not sufficient.”
“Social media companies must take responsibility and act now. These platforms have the power, the technology and the resources to prevent this abuse, yet too often they fail to do so. Allowing racist hatred to spread unchecked is a choice – and it is one that continues to harm players, families and communities across the game.”
“We will continue to offer Ibrahima our full support and will work with the relevant authorities to identify those responsible wherever possible. But the burden cannot keep falling on players and clubs to respond after the damage has already been done.”
“The current situation cannot be allowed to continue. It must be confronted, challenged and eradicated – not tomorrow, but now.”
Now, the French Football Federation have also condemned the abuse Ibrahima Konate suffered in an official statement:
“The FFF condemns in the strongest possible terms the racist insults to which Ibrahima Konaté has been subjected on social networks for several days. This hateful speech, contrary to the fundamental values of sport, is unacceptable. Football must remain a space of respect, inclusion and gathering.”
“No player should have to suffer such attacks because of their origin or the color of their skin. The FFF gives its full support to Ibrahima Konaté and reaffirms its total commitment to the fight against all forms of discrimination.”
“The Federation also reserves the right to take any necessary action to ensure that the perpetrators of these acts are identified and sanctioned.”
No football player or singular person should be subjected to such abuse.
Much needs to change for social media companies to act faster when it comes to blocking out this kind of hate.
It is not acceptable and Ibrahima Konate must be supported at this time.
La FFF condamne avec la plus grande fermeté les insultes racistes dont est victime Ibrahima Konaté sur les réseaux sociaux depuis plusieurs jours.
