Former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum will leave Al-Ettifaq as a free agent this summer, according to transfer expert Ben Jacobs.
The Saudi Pro League side are unable to offer acceptable renewal terms due to budget constraints, meaning departures for both Wijnaldum and team-mate Jack Hendry are expected on amicable terms, barring any fresh investment.
Reports in recent days have suggested the 35-year-old is considering a return to the Premier League, nearly five years after leaving England. His current contract expires at the end of the season.
Despite being in the twilight of his career, Wijnaldum has impressed in Saudi Arabia, registering 15 goals and six assists in 29 appearances this term.
A return to England is believed to be his preference, although no final decision has been made. The Dutch midfielder has spent the past three seasons with Al-Ettifaq, who are currently seventh in the Saudi Pro League with 42 points after 29 matches.
Wijnaldum enjoyed five highly successful years at Liverpool, establishing himself as a key figure under Jurgen Klopp after joining from Newcastle United in the summer of 2016.
The Dutch midfielder made 237 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals and becoming a near ever-present in a side that won major honours across domestic and European competition.
Renowned for his technical quality, strength and control in midfield, Wijnaldum was also trusted in multiple roles when required, occasionally featuring in defence and attack during his time at Anfield.
He delivered several defining moments, including a crucial goal against Middlesbrough on the final day of the 2016-17 season to secure Champions League qualification, and an iconic two-goal performance in the 2019 Champions League semi-final comeback against Barcelona.
Wijnaldum went on to win the Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup with Liverpool, playing a central role in the club’s most successful modern era.
His final season in 2020-21 saw him remain ever-present in the Premier League, helping Liverpool secure Champions League qualification despite an injury-hit campaign and the absence of fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
