Like father, like daughter.
Beyoncé shared the sweet backstory behind the locs Jay-Z rocked for nearly a decade in a Cécred video posted to YouTube on Father’s Day.
The film documents the days-long process of combing out the hairstyle, woven with family snapshots and clips of the singer and their eldest daughter, Blue Ivy, working through his hair together. In the voiceover, Beyoncé explained that the locs were never just about the look.
“Our daughter was about five, and she wasn’t feeling very confident about her hair at that time,” said the Grammy winner. “It inspired Jay to grow out his hair.”
“The 5-year-old Blue had no idea that her father’s hair had texture like hers,” she added. “I thought it was always beautiful that the real reason Jay grew out his hair was to show Blue that her hair was like his hair.”
Blue Ivy, now 14, has faced public scrutiny since infancy — including mean-spirited online commentary about her natural curls during her toddler years.
“We really wanted her to love and embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls,” Beyoncé said.
The teen went on to narrate the audiobook of Matthew A. Cherry’s “Hair Love” and contribute vocals to her mother’s tracks “Formation” and “Brown Skin Girl,” the latter earning her a Grammy.
The rapper combed out his locs to headline the 2026 Roots Picnic in Philadelphia on May 30 — his first solo performance since 2019 — choosing an Afro as a tribute to his late father, Adnis Reeves, who wore the style.
Beyoncé called the days-long detangling process “a family affair,” with Blue lending a hand alongside Jay-Z’s hairstylist Nakia Collins. The “Halo” singer launched her hair care brand in February 2024, and her husband has been a loyal client ever since.
“Jay took better care of his hair than any person I know,” the singer said of her husband. “He gets his hair washed religiously.”
