A woman, in her 20s, is in critical condition and several others including young children were also injured after a shooter opened fire in Coney Island, New York

At least eight people, including four children, have been injured by gunfire in a mass shooting in Brooklyn.

The New York Police Department swarmed Coney Island late last night to reports of gunshots as Fourth of July celebrations were underway.

Cops were deployed to the 2900 block of West 31st Street at about 10.37pm on Saturday, the NYPD said in a statement, as people gathered to watch fireworks.

Detectives scrambled to the scene outside Seapark Apartments and were seen moments later running down the street with young victims in their arms, urgently transporting them to safety, according to the New York Post.

It is unclear how many gunmen were involved or why the shots were fired, but residents told the Post violence is common in the area.

The injured includes a 37-year-old man, a 33-year-old man, a 25-year-old woman, a 21-year-old woman and four boys, aged 14, 12, seven and six. The youngest suffered a gunshot wound to his stomach.

All eight victims were rushed to hospital where the 21-year-old woman, who was reportedly shot in the chest, remains in critical condition.

In a statement, the NYPD said: “All victims were transported by EMS to local area hospitals where seven people were listed in stable condition. The 21-year-old woman is listed in critical condition.”
