Coronation Street viewers were left on the edge of their seats on Friday night as the soap’s much-hyped Murder Week drew to a close and now spoilers have teased that yet more drama is on the way
Coronation Street viewers were left on the edge of their seats on Friday night as the soap’s much-hyped Murder Week drew to a close.
Thanks to a flash-forward that aired in February, fans of the programme, which has undergone numerous format changes over the last few years and moved away from the traditional linear exploration of everyday life on a Manchester backstreet, knew that a death was on the cards.
Maggie Driscoll, Megan Walsh, Theo Silverton, Jodie Ramsey and Carl Webster were lined up as five potentials, with Betsy Swain having come across a dead body, and this week, the programme has aired episodes all set on the same day but from each character’s point of view.
All at the heart of villainous storylines, Irish matriarch has been revealed to have killed her husband several decades ago, whilst Theo had been abusing his partner Todd, Jodie has been seemingly trying to take over her sister’s life, Megan had groomed a schoolboy Will Driscoll into an illicit relationship, and Carl has been stacking up the enemies since he begun an affair with his brother Kevin Webster’s wife, who later turned out to be his uncle after Debbie was revealed to be his biological mum.
But, at the end of Friday night’s episode, which, in a change with tradition, was not released early on ITVX, viewers finally found out that the dead body in question was that of Theo Silverton, meaning that the abusive scaffolder’s reign of terror against Todd had finally come to an end.
But, as ever with the world’s longest-running TV soap, the drama is far from over. Spoilers have revealed that DC Kit Green will be on the case as it all officially becomes a murder investigation, and one resident is hauled in for questioning, whilst Todd struggles to process what has happened.
Meanwhile, there’s trouble for Jodie, who turned up as the long-lost sister of Shona Platt during the programme’s crossover with Emmerdale, having been tied up in the back of a van and forensic evidence at number eight will start to reveal exactly what she’s been hiding all this time. It’s also set to be a tough time for Daniel, who dated Megan as she used him as a coverup for her wrongdoings, when Hope Dobbs accuses him of assault at school and he turns to drink to cope.
It would appear that Maggie is not set to appear next week and actress Pauline McLynn, famed for her role as Mrs Doyle in Father Ted, recently teased that her alter-ego would seem “very dead.” Following a showdown with Megan that aired earlier in the week, both of their fates remain unknown at present.
Teasing her potentiial exit, Pauline said: “I will say this, when I joined the show, I was told that the plan for the character was to kill her. So we shall see! I think you’ll find when you watch all of the five stories that it’s very possible more than one person is dead, that’s another thing I will say.”
Pauline then teased that it could indeed seem like Maggie is the victim in question by the end of the week, but warned fans to not be so sure.
She added: “I do seem very dead at the end of the week. Assume nothing. You might be being fed one thing which is true, but it could be more than one. It’s also brilliantly clear that any one of the five could be a killer, whether or not they’ve killed the person you believe to be dead or not. It’s brilliantly seeded in. There is a justice in Coronation Street, if you do a crime, you have to pay the price.”
Coronation Street boss Kate Brooks said of the big week : “It was a very complicated storylining process! I did lose a bit of sleep and my hair went a little bit greyer. Usually in a murder week you’ve got one victim, then the suspects – we had five potential suspects had to make sure all the stories aligned, made sense and they were all getting to the right place and coming together.”
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
