Police have launched an appeal for information after a woman is alleged to have been raped near a church.
Kent Police received a report on Saturday that “a woman had been raped by a man she met earlier that evening” in Maidstone and they are appealing to the public for help in the investigation.
A 50-year-old man has been arrested and remains in custody pending further enquiries, said the force.
The assault is claimed to have taken place after she met the man in two locations between 7pm and 10pm. The first is alleged to have been at a location in the high street, and the second near a church in the town.
Police have now cordoned off the area and they have urged anyone with information to call 999 with the reference 46/73799/25.
A statement from Kent Police reads: “An arrest has been secured following a rape investigation in Maidstone.
“Kent Police received a report at around 10.30pm on Saturday 9 May 2026 that a woman had been raped by a man she met earlier that evening in two town centre locations. It is alleged the incidents happened between 7pm and 10pm at a venue in the High Street and near a church in Mill Street.”
It continues: “A 50 year old man from Chatham was arrested on Monday 11 May. He remains in custody pending further enquiries. Anyone with information is urged to call 999, quoting reference 46/73799/25.
“Local residents with private CCTV or drivers with dashcam, who may have been in the area at the time of the incident, are also asked to check for footage.”
