Footage captured the moment police arrested an uber driver after tracking him down an hour after a woman reported her horrific knife-point rape
An Uber driver who lured a passenger into his car before raping her at knifepoint has been jailed for 16 years.
Adam Daley, 33, spotted the woman and her friend outside a bar in Leicester city centre in the early hours of December 29 last year before offering to drive them home if they booked the journey through the Uber app. The friends agreed and, after dropping one of the women at her home, Daley drove her friend, who is in her 20s, to a remote lay-by.
During the journey, he made sexualised comments and asked her inappropriate questions before pulling over, claiming he needed to use the toilet. Instead, he ordered the woman into the front seat before threatening her with a knife and forcing her to perform a sex act. During the rape incident, Daley also pulled down his victim’s top and groped her.
After the victim pleaded with him to stop, Daley drove away and left her alone in the lay-by on Soar Valley Way. The woman immediately called 999, with officers using CCTV and ANPR cameras to trace Daley’s white Toyota Auris. Around an hour after the rape, police caught up with him after spotting the car stopped at traffic lights.
Footage released by Leicestershire Police showed officers dragging Daley from the vehicle as he appeared to try to destroy evidence by stamping on his mobile phone. Daley, of Leicester, was later found guilty of rape, sexual assault, possession of a bladed article and making threats to kill.
He was jailed for 16 years at Leicester Crown Court on Friday. Daley also admitted two counts of making indecent images of a child after officers discovered the material while examining his mobile phone.
Despite the victim’s DNA being found on his genitals, Daley denied the offences. He claimed the DNA had transferred after the woman drank from a water bottle inside his car and said he later used the same bottle to wash his penis after urinating in the lay-by. But detectives also discovered Daley had driven past the victim three times after leaving her there.
Leicestershire Police said they believed Daley may have attacked other women while working as an Uber driver.
Detective Constable Matt Smith said: “Despite her deeply traumatic and distressing experience, that night she [the victim] demonstrated exceptional presence of mind and was able to contact police immediately after Daley had driven off. Daley targeted a lone woman after she trusted him to get her home safely.
