Washing machines can easily accumulate bacteria, mould and bad smells, but this £1 Home Bargains cleaner keeps it sparkling and fresh

Washing machines are often overlooked in household chores. Given that they clean our clothes, it’s easy to forget they require maintenance themselves. Yet keeping the appliance clean eliminates bacteria, detergent residue and mould, particularly around the rubber seal. While natural remedies such as white vinegar or bicarbonate of soda work well, for a thorough clean, a specialist product is the way to go.

Elbow Grease’s Washing Machine Cleaner, available from Home Bargains for approximately £1, is a brilliant option. Not only does it freshen and maintain the machine, but it also tackles stubborn grime effectively, and can be used on every component, including the drawer, seal and drum.

Begin by cleaning the drawer according to the packet instructions: pour a small amount into warm water, leave it to soak, and set it aside.

Next, apply some cleaner to a sheet of kitchen roll and wipe down the seal. The amount of mould lurking in this area is genuinely surprising.

A small amount applied to the inside of the door also works wonders, as this area accumulates grime over time.

After roughly 20 minutes, lightly scrub the drawer to loosen any remaining mould and residue, then dry it thoroughly before replacing it.

Pour the cleaning solution into the machine’s wash compartment, then run a hot, empty cycle.

The double-strength formula tackles grime, limescale and unpleasant odours with impressive results.

The drum emerged gleaming, and a satisfyingly fresh scent lingered once the cycle had completed.

Having experimented with numerous washing machine cleaners, I consistently return to Elbow Grease, largely because it can be picked up for as little as £1.

I apply it once a month to keep the appliance in good shape, which can, over time, help maintain its efficiency.

In a similar vein, I also pour drain unblocker down my drains monthly to keep everything flowing freely.
