Liverpool FC striker Alexander Isak has been left out of Sweden’s squad for this month’s World Cup qualifying playoffs. Sweden’s semi-final against Ukraine will come too soon for his return.

Isak has recently started running again at the AXA and was considered to have an outside shot at making the squad, but considering how the player has struggled with fitness even before his injury, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Speaking about the absence of Isak, Dejan Kulusevski, Viktor Johansson, Emil Holm, Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, Alexander Bernhardsson and Emil Krafth, Sweden national team coach Graham Potter had this to say:

“There’s nothing we can do about it.”

“It’s sad to lose players due to injuries, it’s like that for all teams.”

“But we have a very good group, I believe in the squad and am sure that together we can find good solutions and focus on our task.”

With Hugo Ekitike in decent form, Liverpool likely won’t be rushing Isak back onto the pitch anytime soon. Sweden on the other hand, will be hoping he’s fit enough if they do manage to qualify for the World Cup, because the alternative is Viktor Gyokeres.
