Questions have grown louder around the future of Slot himself, while sporting director Richard Hughes and chief executive Michael Edwards – both brought back to spearhead the clubs rebuild – have contracts expiring in 2027 with no public indication of renewals.
Meanwhile, FSG’s broader ambitions around a multi-club ownership model appear to have stalled, with reported approaches to French clubs failing to materialise into anything concrete.
With the season winding down and major decisions looming, investigative journalist Romain Molina has now gone on record claiming that the club is already deep in planning for next season, and that the changes coming will go far beyond just the transfer window.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Molina has reported that Liverpool owners FSG are already thinking about next season, and that the leadership at the club could change dramatically before then:
“The season is not over yet on the pitch, but behind the scenes for the management it is already over at Liverpool,” the French journalist reported.
“The club knows that it has obviously made mistakes and above all are already thinking about a project that will not be a continuation of what we have seen.”
“Two years ago they aspired to a multi-club ownership. That’s why they brought back, among others, Michael Edwards, where he became director of football at the holding company level.”
“That’s why there is also a sporting director, except that the football director normally wants a group with lots of clubs – well there is only one club and he [Edwards] is not very useful when there’s already a sporting director to take care of Liverpool’s transfer business.”
“Slot, Hughes, and Edwards all have contracts expiring in 2027, so by then they want changes. There have been details leaked to the press [regarding Saudi interest in Hughes] because people are not very happy.
“So behind-the-scenes, it’s already over at Liverpool because we’re preparing for the next phase.”
“Nevertheless, given the shareholder structure, what’s going on with the sporting directors, the football director, and the people brought in who are now paid to do nothing, the coach … I would not be surpised to see quite a few changes in the coming months.
