The last time the Reds suffered ten Premier League defeats was in the 2015/16 season, during Jurgen Klopp’s debut season in England.
That number has now been reached as Liverpool lost 2-1 away at Brighton this afternoon.
More games have been lost during this campaign than in both of the last two seasons combined (8).
Arne Slot’s men have struggled with consistency all season long.
The win against Galatasaray in midweek offered real hope, but we have seen the same storyline play out too many times this season. It is always one step forward, two steps back.
Whether the 62-hour turnover in between games played a role or not, Arne Slot will be disappointed once again that his team were out-worked and outplayed against Premier League opposition.
The race for Champions League football next season is tight, and the Reds have loosened their grip further on qualifying for the competition next season.
TNT Sports coverage of the game this afternoon highlighted one problem that appears to be at the root of it all.
On commentary, it was noted that Liverpool have now been outrun by the opposition in 26 of the 30 Premier League games they have played this season.
That clearly demonstrates the lack of fight and effort the players are putting in during their title defence season.
Arne Slot believes that the busy schedule Liverpool have been involved in this season has played a role, as he said after the Brighton game:
“It is clear that we have lost a lot of points after playing in Europe. I have tried to explain a lot of times already why this is but today we also have to give credit to Brighton. In the second half, they were the better team on the pitch.”
Today’s result means that Liverpool remain in fifth place, with fellow Champions League challengers Chelsea and Aston Villa still to play.
Brentford can move to within a point of Liverpool if they win their Premier League fixture this week.
Liverpool will be without Premier League football for two weeks with the latest international break now upon us and will return to action in a fortnight to face Manchester City in the FA Cup.
