Borussia Dortmund have secured the long-term future of Nico Schlotterbeck, who has signed a new contract running until 2031.
The Germany international had been linked with interest from Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but has now committed his future to Dortmund.
Since joining from SC Freiburg in 2022, Schlotterbeck has made 155 appearances, scoring 10 goals and providing 18 assists, while also earning 25 caps for Germany national football team.
He is expected to form a key part of Julian Nagelsmann’s side at the FIFA 2026 World Cup. Schlotterbeck has become an indispensable figure for Dortmund and cemented his status as one of Europe’s leading defensive talents.
Lars Ricken, Sporting Director, said: “We have achieved our goal – clarity by mid-April. That was important to me. Nico Schlotterbeck is a leader at BVB and in the national team. We are delighted that he has returned to top form so quickly after his recent serious injury.
“This demonstrates his willpower and class. We are absolutely convinced that Nico can continue to develop at Borussia Dortmund and become indispensable to our club. Conveying this to him was very important to us in our discussions, which were characterized by mutual respect and trust.”
BVB sporting director Ole Book added: “With Nico, we have one of the best center-backs in the world in our ranks. His play with and without the ball, his distribution, his tackling, combined with his presence and aggression on the pitch – all of this makes him incredibly valuable to us. We are certain that together with Nico we can achieve great things at Borussia Dortmund.”
Nico Schlotterbeck said after penning a new deal: “I’m absolutely delighted to have extended my contract with BVB. I deliberately took my time with the decision because it’s an important one for me.
“We had good discussions throughout, but it wasn’t a process that was completed in just a week or two. The club officials presented me with a good plan, and I know what I have at this club. My goal is to win titles together with Borussia Dortmund.”
Liverpool had identified Nico Schlotterbeck as a strong option to strengthen their defence, with the 26-year-old reportedly shortlisted alongside other centre-back targets as part of long-term squad planning.
However, the situation at Anfield has since evolved. The arrival of Jeremy Jacquet in January, along with optimism over a new deal for Ibrahima Konate, has shifted recruitment priorities.
There is now greater internal confidence in the defensive options available to Arne Slot following a Premier League-winning 2024–25 campaign.
