Some opposition political parties in Nigeria have agreed to work towards presenting a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, in a move aimed at strengthening their chances at the polls.

The decision was reached on Saturday during a national summit of opposition leaders held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where discussions focused on building unity and closer cooperation among major political parties.

The meeting brought together key figures from parties including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), among others. It was held at the Banquet Hall of the Oyo State Government House and hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo chaired the summit, which organisers described as a strategic effort to address Nigeria’s growing socio-economic and security challenges through a more coordinated opposition structure.

Prominent politicians such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour were among those present.

Participants described the gathering as an opportunity to strengthen inter-party collaboration and explore a unified political front capable of challenging the ruling party in future elections.

Discussions at the summit reportedly centred on creating a more organised opposition alliance, with a shared strategy aimed at addressing national issues and improving electoral competitiveness ahead of 2027.
