Most UK motorists know that yellow lines on the road signal parking restrictions.
Single yellow lines denote different parking rules, depending on the signage in any given street. Parking is frequently only permitted during certain time periods, though this isn’t always the case. Signage will typically indicate any additional specific restrictions. According to the Highway Code, double yellow lines mean “no waiting at any time, unless there are signs that specifically indicate seasonal restrictions”. If no signs state otherwise, the rules apply every day, and this includes Sundays and bank holidays.
Drivers may question whether they can disregard restrictions if any lines on the road have faded. The matter has been raised on the Ask the Police website, which forms part of the Police National Legal Database: “The yellow/white lines on the road are worn, does that mean if I park there I won’t get a parking ticket?”
“If the damage is more severe it would be ultimately for the courts to decide on whether it would affect the legality of the lines. If in doubt, don’t take the risk and find somewhere else to park.
“If you do get a ticket and feel it is unfair, make sure you take clear, detailed photographs of the location and the associated parking signs relating to the lines. If it is a ticket issued by the local authority, there is an appeals procedure, use the contact details on the ticket to get further details.”
