The discourse around Arne Slot will likely continue into the summer transfer window. It has been a turbulent season at Anfield, and as a result the rumour mill surrounding the Dutchman’s future shows no signs of slowing down.
Liverpool’s league form has been inconsistent enough to spark genuine concern, and while Slot has steadied the ship in Europe with good results in the Champions League, the Premier League picture has left the club’s fanbase increasingly restless.
However, reports continue to come in that FSG will stand by Arne Slot at least until the end of the season when a review will be conducted, and that there are no active plans to sack the former Feyenoord manager.
Earlier this month, new reports arrived that VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeneß is among the candidates Liverpool are considering if they part ways with Arne Slot.
The 43-year-old, who is the nephew of the legendary Bayern Munich patriarch Uli Hoeneß, is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young coaches in European football.
After working his way up through the Bayern Munich youth system, he took charge of their reserve side and led them to the 3. Liga title in 2019/20, before a spell at Hoffenheim, where he impressed despite limited resources, set him up for the biggest challenge of his career so far.
That challenge arrived in April 2023, when he walked into a Stuttgart side sitting bottom of the Bundesliga and seemingly certain to go down. Within weeks, he had stabilised the club and steered them to a dramatic relegation play-off win over Hamburg.
In his first full season, Hoeneß guided Stuttgart to a second-place Bundesliga finish, their best in 17 years, and delivered Champions League football to the Neckar for the first time since 2009/10.
Stuttgart’s 73 points that campaign represented their highest tally since the introduction of the three-point rule. The following season, with many of the stars from that title push attracting interest from bigger clubs, he led the club to DFB-Pokal glory – their first piece of silverware since their Bundesliga title back in 2006/07 – beating third-tier Arminia Bielefeld 4-2 in the final.
But despite his track record and the Liverpool links, Hoeneß is not being drawn into speculation and said in an interview with German outlet Kicker:
“I am fully committed to VfB and want to continue to be as successful as possible.”
Hoeneß is contracted to Stuttgart until 2028, and the Swabian club will likely fight hard to keep their man if Liverpool or any other clubs come calling in the summer.
