Senegal’s fight to reclaim their Africa Cup of Nations crown has officially moved into the hands of sport’s top court. After all the outrage and political pressure following CAF’s decision to strip Senegal of their AFCON title and award the trophy to Morocco, the country’s federation has now formalised its challenge.
Senegal had made a statement in the aftermath of the decision, asserting that they would pursue clarity with The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after the issue.
Now CAS has confirmed that the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has lodged an appeal against CAF’s ruling that overturned their AFCON triumph. Registered on 25 March 2026, the appeal “eeks to set aside the CAF decision and declare the FSF winners of AFCON,” meaning Senegal are asking CAS not just to annul the sanction, but to formally reinstate them as African champions.
“The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) acknowledges receipt of an appeal lodged by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). The appeal concerns a decision taken by CAF on 17 March 2026 declaring that Senegal’s national team lost the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025 by forfeit and awarding victory to Morocco’s national team by a score of 3–0.”
Matthieu Reeb, CAS Director General, said: “CAS is perfectly equipped to resolve this type of dispute, with the assistance of expert and independent arbitrators. We understand that teams and fans are eager to know the final decision, and we will ensure that arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing.”
CAS has also asserted that all other “ongoing proceedings remain confidential”.
