The university student shared a photo of their food haul while many others couldn’t get over the contents of the stash, as well as the actual price of everything

Life as a student is not easy, with deadlines and a life away from home, it can be hard navigating pre-adulthood especially without a proper source of income.
It’s also famous that many students don’t follow a proper diet and often opt for easy meals to fill their bellies. Now one person revealed what their food shop looks like and many others couldn’t quite get over what the total price was at the end. There was also a variety of bits there – from easy-to-make sachets to multipack crisps.
Posting on Reddit, the person revealed: “£20 of processed junk as a uni student lol.”
In the image, it shows a stash of food, including some easy-to-make sachets from Aldi’s exclusive brand Bramwells. There’s also a six-pack of Space Raiders, Nik Naks, jelly, a variety of cereal bars, some juices and ramen.
Over in the comments section, the student confirmed the shop was completed across four different stories, including Aldi. They then revealed it cost £26 after forgetting to calculate one item.
Since it was shared, it garnered 310 upvotes and many comments. One said: “Least you’re getting your fibre.” Another added: “That’s actually solid for 20 quid.”
A third posted: “I miss being young sometimes – I could happily eat all of that in one evening!”
Others were more curious about the lack of “food” in his haul, to which they replied: “I eat out most days. This stuff is just for the weekends.”
They also shared: “I should’ve mentioned this is exclusively for weekends and snacking – not for everyday meals. I wouldn’t survive off of this everyday.”
Someone also questioned: “How is that only £20? Please post receipt pls.”
How much does a weekly food shop cost now?
As of early 2026, the average UK household spends around £119 per week on food shopping, with annual costs nearing the £6,000 mark.
The cost of living crisis has also caused a basic basket of 30 items at budget supermarkets like Aldi or Lidl around £45-£46, while families in the UK can easily spend £150 per week on food.
And since 2022, prices are a whopping 30% higher. Aldi and Lidl remain the cheapest options. It’s worth noting buying branded products can increase costs significantly compared to store-brand or cooking from scratch.
