Andy Robertson is set to bring his distinguished Liverpool career to a close at the end of the season. The 32-year-old, out of contract this summer, will follow fellow Jurgen Klopp-era icon Mohamed Salah in leaving Anfield on a free transfer.
Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City for £8m in 2017 and became one of the club’s greatest full-backs. He has made 373 appearances for the Reds, scoring 13 goals and assisting 69, while winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Club World Cup, and the UEFA Super Cup.
According to the Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur, alongside Napoli, Juventus, and Atlético Madrid, are all keen on signing the Scotland captain, who turned down a move to Atletico last summer. A return to Scotland is not believed to be part of his plans at this stage.
The 32-year-old drew interest from Premier League rivals Tottenham during the January transfer window. The arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £40 million has seen the Hungary international establish himself as Arne Slot’s first-choice left-back, limiting Robertson to just 15 starts this season.
Robertson’s status as a modern Liverpool great is secure, but his impending departure highlights the transition that has shaped Slot’s squad over the past year. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Díaz have both joined Real Madrid, while the club has also had to cope with the tragic death of Diogo Jota. Captain Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, and Joe Gomez, all out of contract in the summer of 2027.
“It is never easy leaving a club like Liverpool,” said Robertson. “It has been a huge part of mine and my family’s life for the last nine years, but I know football moves on. I know teams move on and now is the time for me to move on.
“I will always look back on amazing memories at this football club. I have put my heart and soul into the club and when I got my chance I just wanted to make the people within this club and the supporters proud of the left-back they are seeing performing week in, week out.
“I know my journey is coming to an end. It has been an incredible journey but I won’t let up. This club means everything to me, the fans mean everything to me, the people connected with the club mean everything to me and I think I owe to them that until my very last day I will give everything to the football club which I have done for the last nine years and I am very proud of that. “The nine years I will look back with a big smile on my face and, yeah, it’s been a hell of a journey.”
