It has been quite the international break for Liverpool. Florian Wirtz reminded the world of his best self with an extraordinary display for Germany against Switzerland. The Liverpool playmaker scored twice and set up two more in a breathless 4-3 win in Basel, having a direct hand in every single German goal.
Wirtz himself described the night as his best ever in a Germany shirt – a timely reminder of what the Reds have in their ranks when he is purring at full tilt.
Meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk made history by becoming the Netherlands’ most-capped captain of all time during the international window, receiving a special gift from the Dutch FA to mark the occasion. Ryan Gravenberch also started in the Netherlands’ 2-1 win over Norway.
But on the women’s front, the international break is only starting now in April.
Liverpool FC Women forward Mia Enderby and defender Hannah Silcock have both been named in the England U23 squad for next month’s WU23 European Competition finals in Spain.
The Young Lionesses take on the Netherlands in a semi-final on Monday, April 13, before returning four days later for either the final or the third-place play-off.
Silcock, meanwhile, is on loan at Birmingham City in WSL2, collecting the senior minutes needed to accelerate her development.
The Liverpool-born centre-back has been part of the Reds academy since she was eight years old, and her call-up to the Young Lionesses is a sign that her progress has not gone unnoticed.
England drew 1-1 with the Netherlands just weeks ago in a March friendly, making April’s rematch in Spain all the more intriguing – and both Enderby and Silcock will be hoping to play their part in bringing home the trophy.
