A new animated comedy series on Prime Video has just launched from a major star of The White Lotus, but reviews haven’t been kind
You’ll never look at your pets the same way after this gross-out cartoon comedy.
Prime Video’s new animated comedy series created by a major star of The White Lotus and Parks and Recreation has been described as “irretrievably bad” in scathing reviews.
The raunchy cartoon sitcom Kevin was created by comedy icon Aubrey Plaza and stars Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City) as a housecat who decides he no longer wants to live with humans.
When he moves out to live in the big city after his owners break up, he encounters a gang of eccentric misfit pets who help him land on his feet.
The star-studded cast also includes Amy Sedaris (Bojack Horseman), Cary Elwes (Knuckles), and Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary).
Unfortunately, despite the promising premise and A-list voice cast, it looks like Kevin’s attempts at risqué humour haven’t hit the mark.
The Guardian has called the cat comedy “depressing” and “so irretrievably bad it must never be allowed to happen again” in their harsh one-star review.
“It’s so awful it’s hard to even express its direness,” they added, and went on: “Laugh-wise, it’s a washout. Punchlines collapse mid-punch. Other jokes make no sense.
“Its unwillingness to engage in character development and its favouring of cruelty over empathy, however, ensures it succeeds at neither.
“There is the suspicion that something has gone very, very wrong in the writers’ room.”
Other reviews, such as The Hollywood Reporter’s mixed write-up, agree the humour is “hit or miss” at best.
“Some of its jokes […] smack of a series trying too hard to declare that it’s Not Your Little Sister’s Animal Cartoon,” THR writes. “Others, like a hoary line about cats being baffled by why people are always scooping litter, make no sense in a universe where cats have opposable thumbs and speak human language.
“At least one subplot, involving an equine Broadway star named Patti LuPony who’s voiced by Patti LuPone, feels like a Bojack Horseman castoff. Lots more punchlines just sort of sit there, neither offensive enough to provoke groans nor clever enough to coax laughs.”
Screen Rant was more generous, admitting the gags are “so-so”, but adding: “Kevin’s humour doesn’t always land — but that doesn’t necessarily make it bad.

“The show is strongest when it’s playing up two elements: raunchy hilarity and animal-focused comedy. As with most adult animated series, there are plenty of drug and sex jokes to be had, many of which are tactfully delivered by the series’ more raunchy characters.”
Fans of similarly boundary-pushing adult comedies such as Rick and Morty and Big Mouth may find lots to love about Kevin, though this is one cartoon cat who’s clearly not for everyone.
