Reports from Germany assert that Xabi Alonso is now ready to take over at Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

For all the turbulence of this season, the expectation around Liverpool remains that Arne Slot will keep his job in the short-term.

Running parallel to that, however, has been the slow‑burn story of Xabi Alonso’s coaching future. After his short, bruising stint in charge of Real Madrid, the former Liverpool midfielder was always expected to take a breather before jumping straight back into elite management. Alonso has never hidden his affection for Anfield.

Now, that day might be drawing closer. According to a new report from Sport Bild in Germany, Alonso is described as ready to take over at Liverpool in the summer if the club decides to make a change.

The article claims there is ongoing contact between the Reds and their former No.14, with the 44‑year‑old prepared to say yes should a formal offer land on the table. Crucially, Alonso is said to want stronger influence over squad planning than he enjoyed at Real Madrid:

“According to SPORT-BILD information, Liverpool is currently one of the hottest candidates for Alonso,” Alex Hesse write.

“If a concrete offer were to come, he would be willing in principle – but only if his conditions were met. A central point: more influence on squad planning. He does not want to repeat negative experiences, for example at Real Madrid, where wishes were cancelled before the contract was signed.”

Sport Bild’s line is that Liverpool are currently the best‑placed of several top clubs monitoring Alonso’s situation, even if Slot remains in position for now.

With the team battling inconsistencies and speculation swirling around, the prospect of a Champions League‑winning cult hero returning to Anfield as head coach is bound to excite supporters – but, as things stand, it still depends on Liverpool making that all‑important call.
