If you’ve been ignoring these three compartments on your washing machine, you could be doing your laundry wrong. Here’s everything you need to know about the household appliance

Doing the laundry is a seriously boring chore. As much as we love having fresh clothes and sheets, it can be tempting to just bung everything into the appliance and hope for the best.

However, if you want to get the best results then you should pay attention. Apparently, the three compartments on our washing machines have very different functions.

On TikTok, a woman called Elle explained what the sections on your appliance are actually for. It may sound simple, but many viewers admitted it’s the first they’re hearing of it.

Starting off, Elle spoke about the first compartment. This is usually the largest section and is intended for the main detergent.

Whether you’re using powder or liquid detergent, this is the section to fill before beginning a standard wash cycle. Elle recommends measuring out the appropriate amount depending on your load size.

She added” “Do a cup full or however much you think is enough.” It’s worth noting that a small or half load needs less detergent than a full one does.

The second compartment, typically the smallest, is designated for fabric softener. This section usually features a line showing the maximum fill level.

Only a modest amount of softener is required for optimal results – as pouring in too much liquid can lead to unpleasant residue being left behind on your clothing.

Lastly, the third compartment tends to be the second largest. It is intended for pre-wash treatments, such as stain removers.

When you’re tackling particularly dirty clothes, adding detergent to this section ahead of the main wash cycle can help combat persistent stains more efficiently.

Even though washing machine models may vary somewhat, most drawers feature symbols to assist users. A single line typically denotes the pre-wash compartment, two lines signify the main detergent section, and a flower symbol marks the fabric softener slot.
