Eleven people were killed and two others injured after suspected bandits attacked Gurbi community in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the bodies of those killed were released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Katsina State Police Command said the attack happened at about 2:40 p.m. on April 26, 2026, when armed assailants invaded the village and shot residents before security operatives arrived.

Police spokesperson Abubakar Sadiq said a joint security team made up of the police, military and other agencies was mobilised to the area immediately after a distress call was received.

He said the team, led by the Divisional Police Officer, moved swiftly to the scene, causing the attackers to flee upon sighting the advancing security personnel.

According to the police, calm has since been restored in the community.

Sadiq added that the Commissioner of Police, Ali Fage, has ordered the deployment of additional tactical teams to the area to prevent further attacks.

The commissioner also directed the Divisional Police Officer and the Area Commander to intensify intelligence-led patrols and strengthen collaboration with other security agencies as well as community stakeholders.

The command expressed sympathy to the families of those killed and assured residents that efforts were ongoing to track down, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the attack.

Police also urged members of the public to remain calm and provide useful information to support ongoing investigations.
