A fire outbreak at the Maganda Road wood market in Kano State has destroyed goods worth millions of naira and at least eight vehicles.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 27, with the Kano State Fire Service confirming that it received an emergency call at about 6:05 a.m. and immediately dispatched firefighters to the scene.

According to the agency, the blaze began in the wood section of the market before spreading to a nearby mechanic workshop and adjoining shops.

Firefighters later brought the situation under control after battling the flames.

Eyewitnesses, however, said the fire may have started around 3:00 a.m., several hours before traders arrived, allowing it to spread through large parts of the market.

A trader, Nura Umar, said people in the area tried to contain the fire before emergency responders arrived, adding that no one could immediately determine how it started since traders were at home when it began.

Reports indicated that more than 50 business premises were affected in the market, which serves as a major commercial hub for thousands of traders.

One of the victims, Engineer Abdulwahab Ilori, said he lost heavy machinery including welding and drilling equipment, estimating the damage in millions of naira.

He added that several auto spare parts shops and vehicles brought in for repairs were also destroyed in the fire.
