BBC Breakfast presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent were on hand to deliver the latest headlines at the start of the week.
BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay announced the devastating death of a pilot and co-pilot after a crash at LaGuardia Airport during the latest instalment of the morning programme.
The BBC star delivered the news to viewers during Monday’s (March 23) show stating that there have also been reports of multiple injuries.
He said: “A pilot and a co-pilot have died after a collision between a plane and a firetruck at a runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
“We’ve got some live pictures coming into us from the scene now. The aircraft was arriving from Canada when it struck the vehicle.
“Local media are reporting that a number of people have also been injured in that incident, and the airport has been closed until further notice. We’ll update you as the programme goes on.”
The live footage of the wreckage was shown to BBC viewers as people could see the significant damage, which was at the nose of the aircraft, which was tilted up in the air.
According to reports, the aircraft had almost 80 passengers on board when it collided with the vehicle at a speed of about 24mph, Flightradar24 said.
On X, the New York City Police Department gave a statement on the incident, informing people to avoid the area is possible.
It said: “Due to an emergency incident at LaGuardia Airport, all streets and highway exits into the airport are closed until further notice.”
Local news sites have reported that The National Transportation Safety Board will be launching a go team to investigate the collision.
NBC News reports that according to an alert by the Federal Aviation Administration, no flights will be going in or out of New York’s LaGuardia Airport until 2 p.m. ET today.
The airport was first closed in the early hours of this morning when the plane struck the vehicle, which was responding to an unrelated incident.
Jon presented the latest show alongside co-host Sally Nugent just a day after the show paid tribute to broadcasting legend Dame Jenni Murray following her sad death aged 75.
