For any Liverpool FC supporter, the emergence of Marco Palestra is no longer just an ordinary scouting note.
Born on March 3, 2005, in Buccinasco, the 21-year-old has developed into one of Serie A’s most consistent wide defenders during the 2025/26 season.
On loan at Cagliari from Atalanta since August 26, 2025, Palestra has made close to 30 league appearances, scoring once and providing four assists.
He has accumulated over 2,500 minutes of football, underlining both his fitness and reliability across the campaign.
Standing at 1.86 metres, he combines physical presence with technical quality.
His dribbling output places him among the most effective full-backs in Italy, with only Kenan Yıldız completing more successful dribbles in the league this season.
Defensively, he has remained disciplined, receiving just three yellow cards despite his high involvement.
His rise has been steady.
In 2023/24, he featured 40 times for Atalanta U23 in Serie C, scoring three goals in all against AlbinoLeffe, Legnago Salus and Fiorenzuola.
He made his senior debut on December 14, 2023, in a UEFA Europa League match against Raków Częstochowa, which his side won 4-0.
By 2024/25, he had played 15 times for Atalanta’s first team across competitions.
Internationally, his progress accelerated in March 2026.
Under Luciano Spalletti, he made his senior Italy debut on March 26 in a 2–0 win over Northern Ireland, before playing 75 minutes in a 1–1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina days later which saw Italy loose out on a ticket to the FIFA World Cup.
The transfer situation is now developing quickly.
According to La Gazzetta, English side AFC Bournemouth are understood to have made an approach for Palestra before his move to Cagliari, signalling early Premier League interest.
The report read, “Juve wanted him, but Atalanta would only accept a loan; Bournemouth came forward, but it was too early for the youngster to think about the Premier League.”
At that stage, the feeling around the player was that a move to England would have come too soon. However, his performances this season have shifted that view significantly.
Liverpool FC remain among the clubs tracking him closely, having previously explored a move before turning to Jeremie Frimpong.
His market valuation now sits around €30 million, but Atalanta are believed to be holding out for a figure closer to €45–50 million.
That stance reflects their long-term plans, with the club viewing him as a potential successor to senior options in Bergamo.
Accoding to the report, Italian interest, including from Inter Milan, remains strong.
However, financial constraints could give Premier League sides an advantage.
With his loan due to expire in June 2026, the next step is approaching quickly.
Bournemouth have already made their move.
Liverpool may soon have to decide whether to follow.
