Dominik Szoboszlai has been the standout player for Arne Slot’s side in a difficult season – and the Liverpool star’s form has seen him linked with a move to Real Madrid
Dominik Szoboszlai has confirmed that he is happy at Liverpool and not considering a summer exit following links with Real Madrid. Szoboszlai has been in superb form for Liverpool this season and talk of a departure had worried fans.
The Hungary international has been the standout player for Arne Slot’s side during a difficult campaign. He has contributed 12 goals and eight assists in 43 appearances across all competitions, despite often filling in at right-back due to injuries.
He only arrived on Merseyside in 2023, yet Hungary manager Marco Rossi claimed recently that Szoboszlai has always ‘dreamed’ of playing for Real Madrid. Rossi’s comments came after Real’s Vinicius Junior revealed that he’s friends with Szoboszlai and regularly messages him.
That speculation led to suggestions of a move to Real this summer, with Liverpool’s Premier League title defence having fallen apart. But Szoboszlai himself says that is not on the cards.

Szoboszlai is under contract with Liverpool until June 2028 and has shone both as a midfielder and at right-back this season. His impact, including some long-range free-kicks, have won acclaim amongst the Anfield faithful and he is delighted with how it’s going.
“I knew [how big Liverpool was], actually, but once you are inside you realise properly what it does mean to be a Liverpool player,” he said. “It was unbelievable because I still remember I had to choose my shirt number and I knew that Naby [Keita] was no longer here, so No.8 was free.
“So that was an easy choice. Then, when I stepped into the training ground, seeing how everything is there and what kind of players are playing here, it was just a dream come true for me.”
The 25-year-old’s iconic shirt number and driving performances in the middle of the park has seen some compare him with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. “It is a big compliment,” Szoboszlai said.
“But I’ve many times that I just try to do my own story and sometimes we struggle as a team but we always try to put everything on the pitch and then this season I do stuff off the pitch, trying to help the new guys, coming from different leagues.
“I know how it feels to be new and I know how hard it is to come to the Premier League and especially Liverpool where you are always expected to win trophies.
“I hope [I am becoming a leader] but you have to ask someone else how they see it but I try to do my best on and off the pitch, try to keep everyone [together], try to be a leader [with] what I am doing on the pitch and that is the most important thing for me. Hopefully we can change this season in a good way.”
