Mohamed Salah may be fully focused on finishing the season strongly with Liverpool, but the reality is that the clock is ticking on his time at Anfield.
After months of speculation, it was finally confirmed last week that the Egyptian superstar will move on when his contract expires, bringing an end to one of the most successful eras in the club’s modern history. Supporters have barely had a moment to process the news, yet the rumour mill has already gone into overdrive over where the 33‑year‑old will be playing his football next.
Unsurprisingly, Saudi Pro League sides are right at the front of the queue.
Salah has long been a dream signing for several clubs in the Gulf, who see him as the ultimate marquee name to boost both their sporting project and global profile. Reports have repeatedly linked Al Ittihad and Al Hilal with eye‑watering salary packages.
However, Saudi Arabia is not the only route on the table. There has also been talk of a romantic return to Serie A, where Salah rebuilt his reputation during spells with Fiorentina and Roma before earning his move to Liverpool.
However, Egypt FA director Ibrahim Hassan feels that a move to the MLS won’t do the Liverpool legend any good:
“Personally, I would prefer him to stay in Europe,” Hassan told On Sports as quoted by Reuters. “I have heard about offers from Paris Saint‑Germain, Bayern Munich and clubs in the Italian league.
“A move to the Major League? He would be far too out of the spotlight. You won’t remember Salah any more than I remember (Lionel) Messi now, I don’t even try to watch him.”
“If he does not receive offers from Europe, then a move to the Saudi league would be a good option, especially with big names such as Cristiano (Ronaldo)”
Wherever Salah ends up, it is already obvious that his next move will be one of the defining stories of the upcoming transfer window, and Liverpool fans will be watching on with a mixture of pride, curiosity and sadness.
