The Federal Government has announced Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday in observance of this year’s International Workers’ Day.

The declaration was made on Thursday, April 30, in Abuja by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who conveyed the decision on behalf of the federal government.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, the minister extended goodwill messages to Nigerian workers, acknowledging their role in the country’s development.

He praised the workforce for what he described as their dedication and resilience, stressing that their efforts remain central to Nigeria’s economic growth and national progress.

Tunji-Ojo noted that the contributions of workers across both public and private sectors serve as a key driving force behind national prosperity, urging them to remain committed to their duties.

He also encouraged employees to uphold values of patriotism and productivity, saying such commitment is essential for sustaining development as the country continues to navigate its economic challenges.

Reaffirming the government’s position on labour matters, the minister said the administration remains focused on improving workers’ welfare and ensuring their security, while also promoting a stable environment for business and economic expansion.

As part of his message for the occasion, Tunji-Ojo wished Nigerians a peaceful celebration and urged citizens to observe the holiday responsibly.
