Curls are always in style. And perfecting classic loose curls yourself at home is easy, with a bit of knowhow… Celebrity hairdresser Hadley Yates is here to help…
There’s nothing super hair stylist Hadley Yates, who counts the gorgeous Vogue Williams as one of his clients, doesn’t know about creating a curl. Hadley says: “Loose curls are such a versatile style as they can be worn casually with a bohemian feel, or equally add movement and polish to hair without looking overdone.”
Hadley owns the Hadley Yates salon in London’s Covent Garden. He says: “The key is to keep the curls soft and brushed through, so they feel effortless rather than too ‘set’. Curling sections away from the face and leaving the ends slightly straighter helps create that modern, relaxed wave rather than a traditional ringlet.
“A curling tong is also a great way to add instant volume and texture, particularly if hair tends to fall flat. The trick is to work with smaller sections and alternate the direction of the curls, then gently brush them out once they’ve cooled. That breaks up the pattern and creates soft, flowing waves that look natural and easy.”
Hadley Yates’ top tips for perfect loose curls
- Prep with heat protection – Always start with a heat protectant to prevent damage and help curls hold their shape (I highly recommend K18’s HeatBounce)
- Use smaller sections – Curling smaller pieces of hair gives softer, longer-lasting movement.
- Alternate curl directions – Switching directions keeps the waves looking natural rather than uniform.
- Leave the ends out – Keeping the very ends slightly straighter gives a modern, relaxed finish.
- Brush out once cool – Let curls cool fully, then brush through gently to transform them into soft, loose waves
