Insecurity: Army chief urges troops to uphold unity, sacrifice

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has called on Nigerian Army personnel deployed under Operation Fasan Yamma and other formations to remain united, disciplined, and fully committed to their duties in safeguarding the country, even as Muslims across the nation mark Eid-el-Fitr.
Shaibu delivered the message on Sunday during a special Sallah luncheon organised for frontline troops within the 8 Division Area of Responsibility in Dan-Ali, Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina State. He was represented at the event by the Commander of the Infantry Corps and Centre, Maj.-Gen. Godwin Mutkut.
In his remarks, the Army Chief described the occasion as more than a festive gathering, noting that it also served as a moment for reflection on sacrifice, duty, and shared commitment among military personnel engaged in ongoing security operations.
He congratulated Muslim officers, soldiers, and their families for completing the Ramadan fast, commending their spiritual discipline and resilience during the holy month.
Shaibu also reflected on the broader significance of this year’s fasting period, pointing out that it coincided with the Christian Lenten season. He noted that personnel from different faiths observed fasting and spiritual reflection simultaneously, describing it as a unifying experience within the armed forces.
According to him, the discipline required during fasting, alongside endurance and moral renewal, mirrors the qualities expected of professional soldiers serving in challenging environments. He emphasised that such shared experiences strengthen unity and purpose among troops.
The Army Chief also paid tribute to fallen soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices continue to inspire those still in service. He further acknowledged personnel currently deployed in difficult operational theatres, many of whom are separated from their families during the festive period.
Shaibu reassured troops of the Nigerian Army’s continued commitment to improving their welfare, stating that efforts are ongoing to enhance living conditions, professional development, and support systems for both soldiers and their families. He added that operational effectiveness depends not only on equipment and strategy but also on morale and welfare.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support to the Armed Forces, particularly in strengthening welfare structures and operational capacity.
At the event, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2 under Joint Task Force North-West, Operation Fasan Yamma, Maj.-Gen. Paul Koughna, commended the initiative, describing the luncheon as a morale-boosting gesture in line with the Army leadership’s directive.
Representing Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mua’zu Nasiru, also praised the troops for their commitment and bravery in confronting insecurity, including banditry and kidnapping in the region. He assured that the state government would continue to support security agencies with logistics and welfare assistance while strengthening collaboration to restore peace.
The event featured a symbolic gesture of solidarity, as senior military and government officials personally served meals to troops in appreciation of their service and sacrifice.
Katsina State remains one of several areas in the North-West affected by persistent insecurity linked to banditry and other violent crimes. Operation Fasan Yamma, a joint military task force, continues to play a key role in countering these threats and stabilising affected communities.
