Jamie Carragher believed that Arne Slot had to make a shift to his Liverpool team against PSG in the Champions League, following a difficult defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup over the weekend.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes that head coach Arne Slot simply had to change his setup for the Reds’ clash with PSG in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Parc des Princes.
The Anfield outfit have endured a rollercoaster of a season, which took a fresh turn over the weekend with a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City, which dumped them out of the FA Cup and ending any hope of a domestic trophy.
It means that the Champions League remains the final hope of any silverware, with attention quickly turning to Liverpool’s clash with the reigning European champions, PSG.
Given how easily the Reds have been undone in recent weeks, Slot decided it was time for a change as he lined up his team with a back five to combat the threat of the home side, while Mohamed Salah was dropped to the bench.

For Carragher, it was the right call, as he discussed the team pre-match to CBS Sports, and said: “Yeah, I like it [the formation change and team changes].
“I like the fact that the manager has done something different because for far too long this season, we’ve been saying the same things about Liverpool being really poor out of possession.
“If you go back to September, October, some really bad results and the same things were happening at the weekend.
“So I think he has changed the system, it’s the first time Arne Slot has gone to this system with his first-choice team since he’s been at the club in over almost two years.
“So it is a big shift, you know, it’s not something to be taken lightly that he’s made this shift, but he had to do something when you’re playing against the best team in Europe and right now his team, with the way they’ve been playing this season in a traditional way, they would not have been able to deal with playing PSG at home.”
