As Liverpool prepare for life after Mohamed Salah, the search for the next long-term talisman out wide could lead to a transfer head-to-head with Manchester United.

With the Egyptian king confirming he will be leaving Anfield at the end of the season, Liverpool’s recruitment team will no doubt be scouring Europe for a young, high-upside attacker who can grow into a leading role in the new era under their next head coach.

However, it now appears that Liverpool may not get a free run at the 19-year-old, with Premier League rivals Manchester United ready to step up their own interest. Multiple reports in England have suggested that Diomande is high on United’s list as they look to reshape their options on the left flank ahead of the summer. The teenager is viewed as a player with a huge ceiling and the kind of explosive one-v-one ability that could transform an attack for years to come.

Now Sky Sports reporter Danyal Khan has reported that Manchester United could look to steal a march on rivals for Diomande this summer:

“Leipzig’s Yan Diomande is high on Manchester United’s list as they search for a left-winger this summer. Reported in January the club had been monitoring Diomande but United could move early in the summer as he’s believed to be attracting interest around Europe + seen to have a high ceiling at just 19-years-old.”

Fabrizio Romano has already confirmed that United sent scouts “several times” to watch Diomande in recent months.

Given his age, profile and electric style, he fits perfectly into the sort of forward planning Liverpool have become known for in recent years. But if United decide to move early and aggressively, the Reds could find themselves facing a familiar transfer battle – this time for a player who many see as an ideal heir to Salah’s right-wing throne.
