Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield has taken on do or die status for Arne Slot’s side, who trail 2-0 from the first leg in Paris and know Europe is their last realistic route to silverware this season.
Slot’s side showed character against Fulham to end a three-match losing run, and that spirit will need to be transferred to a sold-out Anfield tonight.
The atmosphere will be electric, the fans know what is required, and so do the players. PSG are formidable, but they are not invincible, and Liverpool have the quality on their day to turn this tie on its head.
Into that backdrop comes news from France about how the travelling PSG support plan to build up to the match. Journalist Arthur Perrot reports that, as happened on their last visit to Merseyside, a large organised group of Parisian fans will hold a pre-match procession in Liverpool on Tuesday evening.
The gathering is expected to begin at Goodison Park at 6pm UK time, before making its way on foot across Stanley Park towards Anfield ahead of the 8pm kick-off. Around 3,000 PSG supporters are due to be housed in the away end, in line with UEFA’s allocation for quarter-final ties.
Local authorities are understood to be aware of the plans, with the route mirroring last season’s march and designed to funnel visiting fans safely towards the stadium.
For Liverpool, it is another reminder of how seriously the French champions are taking the occasion and how visible their backing will be around the city in the hours before kick-off.
Inside Anfield, though, Slot will hope that the home fans are able to bring the atmosphere themselves.
Speaking in his pre-game press conference, Slot said:
“I think our fans are up for it to make it even louder, which is also needed because then their players get what they don’t expect. First of all, a better performance from us, which I do think they would expect, by the way – it’s hardly possible to play at the same level again. And our fans, I think I can trust them [to be] even louder than last season.”
@RMCsport #RMCLive #LIVPSG
