A political advocacy group, Oyo Defender, has voiced concern over what it described as fresh political efforts to position a former commissioner who served under late former Governor Abiola Ajimobi for the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State.

The group made its position known in a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its Secretary, Adedosu Ifaponle.

According to the organisation, it is troubling that at a time many residents are calling for accountable, transparent and people-oriented leadership, individuals facing serious public allegations are being linked with plans to contest for the state’s top office.

Oyo Defender stated that reports in the public space have associated the unnamed aspirant with an alleged N30 billion financial matter said to involve the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

While noting that every citizen is entitled to the presumption of innocence, the group argued that allegations of such magnitude should not be brushed aside without a clear and transparent resolution.

It said anyone seeking to govern Oyo State must possess not only administrative competence but also unquestionable integrity and the confidence of the public.

The group added that managing public resources is a serious responsibility, insisting that aspirants for the governorship should have records free from unresolved controversies.

Oyo Defender also called on anti-corruption agencies to ensure that all pending allegations involving political office seekers are properly investigated and openly addressed.

According to the statement, the people of Oyo State deserve clarity and assurance that those aspiring to lead them meet the highest ethical standards.

The group further urged political parties, civil society organisations and residents to resist any attempt to impose candidates whose credibility remains under serious scrutiny.

It maintained that the 2027 governorship election should be an opportunity to strengthen trust in governance rather than a contest shaped by political manipulation.

The organisation concluded that Oyo State needs leadership founded on honesty, accountability and service, stressing that the future of the state must be built on integrity.
