Napoli manager Antonio Conte has openly expressed disappointment with striker Romelu Lukaku after the Belgian reportedly missed training and failed to greet him during a recent visit to the club’s training base.
Conte made the remarks after Napoli’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Cremonese in a Serie A match played on Friday.
Conte reacts to Lukaku incident
According to the Italian coach, Lukaku was present at the training ground and held discussions with club officials, but did not make any effort to speak with him despite his office being nearby.
Conte said he was surprised by the striker’s behaviour, adding that he expected at least a greeting or message.
The Napoli manager noted that coaches often try to understand players during difficult situations, but sometimes the same consideration is not returned.
Possible disciplinary action
Reports indicate that Napoli are considering disciplinary measures and possible legal steps after Lukaku allegedly failed to report for training earlier in the week.
The Belgian forward had spent the recent international break in his home country while continuing recovery from injury before returning to Italy.
Injury-hit season
Lukaku has endured a difficult campaign due to a recurring hamstring injury that has limited his appearances this season.
The 32-year-old has featured only seven times, with his last outing coming in early March.
He is now said to be working hard to regain full fitness before the season concludes.
Future uncertain
With his current contract at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona running until the end of next season, Lukaku now faces growing pressure to rebuild his relationship with Conte.
The striker is also hoping to return to the Belgium national team setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
