The March international break is drawing to a close, and for Liverpool fans, the news coming out of the camps is largely positive.
The most headline-grabbing update involves Florian Wirtz, who put on an extraordinary one-man show as Germany came from behind to beat Switzerland 4-3 last Friday – scoring two goals and registering two assists in a scintillating display.
However, with Germany still to face Ghana on Tuesday, head coach Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed rotation is firmly on the agenda, meaning Wirtz is expected to be shielded from further minutes.
That is welcome news for Arne Slot, with Liverpool preparing for a blockbuster FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
While the senior stars have been grabbing the headlines, one member of Liverpool’s U21 setup has also been quietly representing his country on the international stage. Midfielder Kyle Kelly has been on duty with St Kitts and Nevis, and academy journalist Lewis Bower reported on Monday that the 20-year-old started their friendly clash against Solomon Islands.
The Caribbean nation beat the Solomon Islands 4-2, with Kelly managing to get on the scoresheet.
Bower added that Kelly “has been one of Liverpool U21s most consistent performers in 2026 and will court interest from other clubs this summer”.
It has been quite a journey for the Northampton-born midfielder. Kelly joined the Liverpool Academy as far back as 2018, formally signing with the club in September 2020 before putting pen to paper on his first professional contract in October 2022.
His pathway to international football came about in unusual fashion too – St Kitts and Nevis actually approached him via Instagram after spotting his heritage in his bio, leading to a senior debut in March 2024, coming off the bench in a 3-1 win over San Marino.
Remarkably, that cap came before Kelly had ever featured for Liverpool’s first team – a rare distinction he shares with Conor Bradley.
This season, the left-footed defensive midfielder has racked up 11 appearances for the U21s in Premier League 2, accumulating 844 minutes on the pitch.
With clubs reportedly circling ahead of the summer window, it remains to be seen if Liverpool sanction an exit for player with obvious potential.
Kyle Kelly has started for St Kitts and Nevis senior team this afternoon as they currently lead Solomon Island 2-1.
